There is (well, was) much debate on whether this is actually public
domain. It was "reportedly" released by one of the three original "authors".
The only other active author at the time maintains that this release violates
his copyright on a significant portion of the code and therefore the source
is
technically NOT public domain.
However in as much as the law recognizes the releasing author as a valid
holder of copyright, they also recognize that he has the right to release the
code (barring legal action of other authors). No such action was taken, or is
pending, therefore one can argue that the source "as is" is PD.
On another note, this is TG 2.5g (or variation thereof). It is in no way
functionally similar to the current TG release. RG was originally built from
this source (as were a number of other BBSes). You will find that aside from
the general look and feel (and numerous security holes which were common to
bbses of that time) it has little in common with the current release.
The code will not compile (but any pascal programmer can easily fix
this). It will take a little debugging to make it work (a good programmer can
get past this relatively quickly). And then it's functionally equivalent to
2.5g and certainly will require a complete rework to make it even begin to
resemble the more secure newer version by Tim Strike.
I'll be honest, you could write a better BBS from scratch if you can
write a general purpose COMM program. But if you're just curious, it's a
great
curiosity.
Being a friend of the current author I cannot with good conscience offer
to distribute the file or even tell you where to locate it. I can however
tell
you that at last check I did see it available on the WWW posing as source for
version "I". And I know of at least one web page that offers a number of BBS
source codes.
