I mainly shoot .45's.. I'm an old retired IPSC shooter.. I don't shoot X
rings except in high power rifle matches out to 1000 yards.
to put it very mildly.. we used to shoot at least 1000 rounds of .45 a month
in practice.. ;)
In this case the Mohave's can be so small that a .45 with high visability
fixed sights are a pain when it comes to a very small agressive snake.
I have a picture of me up in Lancaster on Sunny in 1981 with my old
Competition .45 on my hip.. :)
The snake shot is easier out of a small .38. Only load the first cylinder
since the shot capsule will occasionally unseat in the next cylinder upon
recoil.

Shovels are very expedient weapons and won't spook the horses.. but then I've
rarely ever had to shoot a snake since I make sure to make a fair amount of
noise in snake country when I'm walking..
They're there for a reason and I won't touch them unless they're to close to
the horses or house.
However back in about 87, I had to kill a diamondback that was over 6 feet
living about 15 feet from the arena fench..
