Well, it only made sense to me to make sure the critters are eating
enough to maintain AND improve their weight. My motivation for this is
that the Jendays I've raised all seem to lose WAY too much (22%-25%) of
their body weight during the weaning process. Either I'm doing something
wrong, or I have a wierd family of jendays. They peak WAY over the
parent's full adult weights, then drop to almost skin and bones until
they're almost weaned, when they begin to put weight back on slowly. But
during the weaning process, they all stay healthy, and are strong and
fit--no sickly babies or problem children. They just wean out a bit too
bony about the keel bone.
It's mostly for MY peace of mind to fatten them up a bit before they go
home. That way, if they DO stop eating for a few days during the
"settling in period", they have a cushion of weight to lose before they
start to get sick. I've not had one quit eating after moving yet, but if
it ever happens, I'll feel better about the baby's chances if it's up to
close to adult weight.

We all learn all the time, I hope!

Thanks! The new mom-to-be is SO excited about her new baby--she calls
almost daily for updates. I got the sexing results today--this Jenday is
also a female, which gives this pair 5 sons and 2 daughters so far.
And all my polyoma tests were negative (again!)!!!! YAAAAAY!!!!!!!
