My son is currently using the seventh grade program from Calvert school.
At first I felt this was ideal - strong academics and already made
lesson plans, which come in very handy being a first year homeschooler -
but sometimes I find it too restrictive. He's registered in the Teacher
Advisory Service so we can't skip anything and I'm having a hard time
adding things I feel would help, like biographies, fictional accounts of
historical times, even a simple field trip.
BUT, every time I think of switching to a less structured program like
Clonlara for next year, my son balks. It seems he enjoys having
everything laid out for him and being told exactly what to do on what
day. Just because *I* say to do it doesn't carry the weight of "It's
written in the lesson plan." I guess all those years of public school
have him brainwashed. Unschooling totally is out of the question to my
husband, who also wants a structured program.
So, my question is, are there any programs for high school laid out like
the Calvert grammar school program? All texts and workbooks and lesson
plans being part of the package, along with a few required works of
fiction. If not included, at least mandatory. One pet peeve about the
public school system in our town - reading books is not required. My son
went through sixth grade and had only one book report in all those
years, and *that* one was in second grade.
A secular program is preferred, but a slightly religious one will not be
totally out of the question. Something like Rod & Staff would probably
be out of the picture totally.
Thanks for any insight and advice.
