I successfully copied a disc to a CD-RW using the cdrecord utility
copycd.cmd I took this disc and played it on a new, cheapo DVD/CD player
($50 at Walmart) hooked to the TV and it worked perfectly.

Next I took it to my 1998 vintage auto and tried it in the CD player
there. As I expected, it was a no go.

That same 1998 auto CD player has ZERO problems with CD-R media (VERY
reflective surface)
