BS> LR> Facinating. :) I have heard that Win 95 does use
BS> LR> 16 bit code - but, nope, not DOS 16 bit code. Haven't heard that yet
BS> LR> from any reliable source. Got any sources ?
BS>See "Unauthorized Windows 95" by Andrew Schulman (IDG). He explains how
all
BS>the standard DOS stuff is still there in W95, with just a little Darwinian
BS>evolution, and a lot of file name changes (i.e. COMMAND.COM is still
here,
BS>but the name is changed to KRNL386.EXE or some such). mSoft said that
Win95
BS>"does not depend on DOS", and this has been widely mis-quoted as meaning
BS>there is no 16-bit code. Schulman explains that this does not actually
mean
BS>that DOS is not there, it simply means that Win 95 does not depend on your
BS>already having bought DOS (as you had to with Win 3.1) because DOS is
BS>included in the package with Win 95.
For what it is worth, there is a conference called OS_DEBATES, or
something like that, that is devoted to this sort of question. In fact,
someone recently posted a message from Microsoft claiming that
Schulman's boo is not entirely accurate, as it was based on a beta
version of Win95. It is all a rather involved topic.
