had other hdd's on the onboard. Because the add-on cards have their own
bios that loads after POST, there is no problem hardware-wise. There can
be some confusion in various OS's as to how each system orders each drive
but some OS's have workarounds. The Linux kernel, for example, has an
option to reverse order and count offboard devices first. AFAIK most OS's
default to beginning with onboard (should any exist) first. Some bioses
have options to alter boot order. Most situations have enough workarounds
that one can theoretically add numerous drives, though I have yet to try
multiple IDE PCI cards in one box.

I have two Promise PATA cards. No problems.
I have never tried booting from second Promise,
only data drives.
I always boot through IBM OS2BM.
