     YES! I FEEL his pain! 
WE have 3 feet of top soil and then you hit ......hard pan:( The topsoil
can be anything from talcum powder dirt w/ Boulders to clay w/ Boulders.
I also run into BIG ROCKS, gravel, and tree roots. We are about 30 miles
from Mt Rainier in Washington and I think my horse pasture is an old
glacial rock bed. I was tamping the posts in with a steel bar. Then my
neighbor showed me how to water pack the dirt. It's alot easier and the
posts are just as tight. I only have 1000 more feet of posts to go and
