That is changing a lot. For at least ten years I have been trying to
justify a TIG welder. Every year I go to the SEMA show in Vegas and
pester the vendors. The one I had been looking at sits on the floor
on wheels. The new model is more powerful, has a longer duty cycle,
and a handle on top. It is about one fifth the size. They got rid of
most of the copper.
Most of the reduction in size is due to the efforts of the integrated
circuit manufacturing companies. I am an electronic design engineer.
Well, maybe "design" is a stretch. Mostly I string ICs together.
And the density just keeps increasing.
