Actually, everything goes on sale (in the US) because of open cutthroat
competition. In the case of ide HDDs, because makeing more capacity next
month for the same price as this month means you better clear inventory
before it is obsolete in the marketplace and you have to sell at a loss.


And rebates allow the mfgs to never show a drop in retail sales, however
punishing the competition to market share and profits.

My MB (Tyan Tomcat K8E) has two IDE channel (4 drives) and 4 SATA 
channels (4 drives) which its BIOS calls IDE 2 through 5.

I also recently bought some large IDE drives with great rebates. I 
suspect the manufacturers are selling IDE stock because they are 
switching to SATA. There is a reason why anything goes on sale.
