Hunting is a sacred thing, a religion.
Personally, I don't see why God would be in a church on Sunday, when he
could be out in His woods, sitting on a log with His .22 across His
knees, listening for the delicate sound of squirrel cuttings falling
through the leaves. :-)
I have been a hunter for more than 40 years -- the solitary enjoyment of
the woods, the link with our remote ancestors, and the honesty of
hunting all appeal to me.
When I kill an animal, I have done the act myself, and cannot fool
myself by pretending the meat I eat was somehow manufactured behind the
butcher's counter at the local Safeway.
As Will Durant (the author of "The Story of Civilization") said:
"We do our slaughter by proxy now, having lost the stomach for
honest killing in the fields."
I know the sacredness of the bond between the hunter and his prey. I
understand why the drawings on the caves at Lesfaucalt exist, and why
the Chyenne sang to the spirit of the buffalo.
