From: "Frank Haber" My uncle's office was seven floors under the 1945 impact. The only damage in that suite was to some bric-a-brac that fell off a shelf. He was out, but a secretary, duly frightened, said the building swayed "several inches." Two floors up, they had to paint -- just plaster damage. I've never inspected the Empire's elevator shafts, but the stairwells are something else. They'd be good bomb shelters, if they weren't so high in the air. They hold a maniac "vertical race" there every year. Standing in an open fire door, the noise of sneakers is very loud, but there's absolutely no vibration from the footsteps. Classic curtain-wall, steel ladder skyscrapers don't pancake like those accursed WTC towers; they sort of crumple a bit. I don't think any part of any skyscraper could ever fall more than, say, a third of the tower height away from the base. That kind of shear strength doesn't exist outside of Star Trek . --- BBBS/NT v4.01 Flag-5* Origin: Barktopia BBS Site http://HarborWebs.com:8081 (1:379/45) SEEN-BY: 633/267 270 @PATH: 379/45 1 633/267 |
