Sounds you nmight want to pose that question of Battery substitution to
ICOM in an "E" mail.

BUT it sounds like the Radio has a smart charge control chip inside. And
some say Charging NiMH batteries in a "Smart" NiCad charger works
fairly well it would be worth a try.
