Well your reasons were still a bit more noble than my Brother's. He
enlisted to avoid some other problems going on in his life at the time.
However, my brother went in during '68 and spent a year in nam covering '68
and '69. He was there for a lot of the excitement, but as a truck driver
he didn't have it as bad as a marine grunt in the bush. On the other hand
when you are the truck driver who loses the drawing of the straws and has
to drive the tanker full of jet fuel around land mines and snipers that
particular trip can be pretty nerve wracking. Its bad enough avoiding the
land mines and snipers and attacks by small patrols of the enemy when you
are hauling something other than several tons of volatile explosive
material. On one trip when he wasn't driving the jet fuel truck the jet
fuel truck hit a landmine. When it went up the explosion was so bad and
the heat from the fire so intense that the trucks behind it, even though
already well spaced out, had to back up to avoid being burned by the heat.
Between convoys however he had the luxury of being housed in barracks on
the base at Cam Ron Bay (not sure I spelled that correctly) which
definitely was an edge over the marine and army grunts living and fighting
in the bush.
Cheers,
Gary
