Thurston Ackerman did willfully write on 09-22-97 (to Dave Gostl ), and I
quote...
TA> I didn't have any straw, so I used some old window screens that
TA> dissapated the heaver water droplets into a fine mist. The screens
TA> were supported by thin pipes that didn't mat down too much grass and
TA> easely filled in when removed. The screens supported a hose sprinker
TA> nicely that was feed by water pumped from rain barrels by my celler
TA> sump pump (retrieved from its summer holiday 8-).
TA> I don't know how deep your sandy areas are but I remember an much
TA> earlier home sight that sat on several feet of old river sand; so we
TA> would dig down about a foot and the put in about six inches of clay
TA> to support the remaining loam fill and retain sufficient water to
TA> support a fair lawn.
That sounds like a lot of work, but I bet you got excellent results.
My riversand is only about 6 inches. I've been saving grass cuttings to
use as cover. I'll be planting this week. Also have a new sprinkler that
can adjust for the sloped areas. That will make the whole operation
easier, without letting it dry out.
