DA>-> DA>-> Now that's the way to do it -- you can never go back and
DA>-> re-shoot DA>-> that first deer, so it pays to do it right.
DA>->
DA>-> DA>I've decided that my first deer will be taken with a 12 ga slug or
DA>-> round DA>ball that I cast and load myself.
DA>->
DA>-> I recommend the round ball route -- it's more traditional, and you
DA>-> get to hunt earlier in the season. Besides, it's easier to make a
DA>-> muzzle loading rifle shoot well than it is to develop an accurate
DA>-> slug load.
DA>-> I'd suggest looking at the Lyman Plains Rifle in .54 caliber if you
DA>-> go the round ball route -- it's a good rifle for the money, and I
DA>-> heartily recommend using a BIG round ball for deer.
DA>Uh, I meant "12 gauge slug or 12 gauge round ball." I did come upon
DA>one load for 12 ga round ball that gave me 1" groups at 25 yards, but it
DA>used Pyrodex instead of smokeless. Oh well, as they say "If it's stupid
DA>but it works, it's not stupid."
If you can get it to shoot that well, it's bloody brilliant! :-)
I wouldn't mess with it -- you've got your deer load.
DA>The Lyman .690" round ball fits nicely in a WAA12R wad and shoots fine
DA>in cylinder bore shotgun. The key is to lay the flat sprue on the base
DA>of the shotcup. When using a choked shotgun, Lyman's .662" roundball
DA>will fit in a shotcup and still pass through a choked barrel.
That's something I'll have to try. Thanks for the tip.
