I don't know where the problem could be either. However, as a first
step towards narrowing down the problem, try the DVD-enabled version of
CDrecord that I mentioned - you'll need to rescan the bus to make sure
you've got the right ID, but other than that, it has worked for me...

If it complains about the drive, it would seem likely that it either
has a fault or is not quite standard. The latter seems unlikely, since
I seem to remember reading that Sony DVD-RW are either rebadged Liteon
or LG units, both of which are quite standard.

If it still fails, I would suggest putting it in another machine under
Windows (yeah, I know...) and trying it there to see if the drive
itself will function in another environment.

Not a lot, since they are all ROM drives, not RW drives. If the adaptor
is not passing the full SCSI command set, it might well work with a
read only drive but not with a writer.
