| subject: | Re: [OS2HW] PSU prices |
Hello
Sorry for the heavy snippage but it is only about hopefully informed
opnion on power supply manufacturers worthy of consideration. While I have
indeed had some good luck with no-name cheapies I have also been burned.
OTOH I have owned 2 "PC Power&Cooling" brand supplies both of
which still work well within their extremely conservative specs and one is
over 10 years old and seen beaucoup rough service. They are quite
expensive but when you don't care to gamble in the slightest and need total
reliability, you just cannot go wrong with PCP&C.
Lately however there are some strong contenders of nearly the same simple
reliability. Antec is very close and some models compete directly with
PCP&C and some sources say they prefer them over "ol
faithful". Something more uneven, requiring a little more specific
model research are the reputations of Vantec, Thermaltake, and Enermax but
still generally considered above average. AFAIK these are each
manufacturers in their own right and not merely "re-branders"
where both well known names, like Asus, and no-names, like
"HouseBrand" (no kidding) abound.
Incidentally I have bought quite a few Antec's lately largely because
they have been having numerous super deals, some only with case and some
separately, with rebate programs such as found at CompUSA. For example I
bought an "Antec Sonata I" case with a 380watt "True
Power" PS for $59 US after rebate which I did get BTW in fairly
reasonable time. Each alone cost at least what the total was. Needless to
say I'm pleased with the price but also highly pleased with the quality of
both.
If you search specs instead of brand names it is worthwhile to pay heed
to the mantra chanted by PCP&C "check the thermal environment
specs". Many do indeed perform up to spec only outside on Pluto in a
stiff wind so watch out.
hope this is helpful
