 How do, Tom?

JB>Now I understand how the line of sight would come into
 JB>play. My first notion
JB>and perhaps due to overly sensational reporting - made
 JB>me suspect the patent
JB>had more to do with echo-locating, and ranging in a
 JB>novel and fantastic way.

TW> Unfortunatly NOT. The development of a "REAL" acoustic
Torpedo during
TW> WWII was have bee a GREAT asset.

It's what likely made me sit up and listen to the television program a
little closer. Typically, it's likely as much a propaganda ploy than a
practical punch. Even the article you steered me to may have
sensationalized the military refusing of the system. (sic.)

TW> In those days Surface ships made a lot of Torpedo Attacks on other
TW> surface ships also. In fact in several WWII battles some Destroyers
TW> made attcaks on Battle Ships. It was mostly a diversionary tatic
TW> though. And also in those days all Battle Groups had several ships with
TW> Spotter planes. Most Battle Ships and Cruisers of the had had them.

But mostly when in range of an occupied air field, right? I've seen some
film of a seaplane launching off a couple of bridged turret barrels, but I
got the impression it never was too practical. Hence the battle fleet.
