subject: [OS2HW] Acard 7720, DVD, Early Report

Hello Early Birds

     This is a preliminary report.

HARDWARE ITEMS
--------------

     1. Acard AEC-7720U bridge of SCSI interface to IDE interface.

     2. Sony DRU-720A ATAPI DVD drive.

THE STORY
---------

This project(?) came about because my Plextor CD-RW drive stopped
working and I need something to deal with CD-RW disc's. At the time I went
shopping, there were no CD-RW drives for sale on e-Bay.

My initial connection of the Sony DVD drive was through
the Acard SCSI-2-IDE adapter/converter.

There is no problem reading off of a CD in the DRU-720A
with the drive connected via the AEC-7720U.

The problem comes when one tries to use the "Write"
features of the CD-RW disc's.

After my initials Write failures, I learn, er, ah, deduced that
someone at Memorex was selling CDR discs as CD-RW discs.

This was confirmed for me when I took the Acard off of the DVD drive
and connected it to the IDE port on my motherboard.

Now that the drive was connected via the IDE interface,
I got an understandable ERROR message about bad media when
I was trying to BLANK Memorex's Cdr's labeled as CD-Rw's.

When I changes to a cheap, generic, bulk pack CD-RW discs, everything
started working as advertised.

I have now spent a week writing and re-writing CD-RW discs. What I
have been working on involved 4 or 5 discs, I have
performed atleast 28 Blanking operations.

[H:\APPS\CDRECORD\DOW-LOGS]

So, since using the IDE connection to the DVD drive
kind of messes up the Drive Lettering of the CD drives,
I switched the connection back to the AEC-7720U.

My first Blanking attempt with CDRecord to one of the
discs I had been successfully blanking all week connected
via the IDE interface, with the Acard failed, as you can see
above.

I am hopeing I can drag someone in here today to pull
the Acard out of my computer again and plug in the IDE cable.

     That is all for now.

     Hope this helps somebody.
