RM>Most fans are used to literally decades of (admittedly non-canon)
RM>history, which TNG suddenly turned on it ear. Canon Trek has a long
RM>history of ignoring and contradicting what has become "common knowledge"
RM>among Trekkies, and this is just one more example of how TPTB ignored
RM>and flouted all that had become "true."
To a certain extent, these are True Facts, I agree. However,
whether the fans like it or don't matters not, unless they put
down the money to fully fund Trek (*&* have legal right to the
stuff, which of of course is another matter altogether , they
didn't own it any more when TNG came out that they did when GR
first put TOS on the air. And the simple fact in the business
is: unless you're the one playing the piper, you're not the one
calling the tune. TPTB were in no way, shape, form, or fashion
obligated to abide by what some of the _fans_ had decided they
wanted Trek to be. In analogy, look at F*S*: They "improved"
(supposedly) Trek, & found out very quickly indeed that they did
not own Trek just because the people who did own it licensed them
to make use of the name for their gaming system.
I know at this point a number of people who consider themselves
die-hard fans of the One True Trek variety are probably spooling
up vitriol to send my way , but the simple fact is that what
I said is in fact so -- the tail never has authority to wag the
dog it's attached to, & the fans do not have authority to dictate
what is/ain't Trek to the people who own it. :)
A perhaps somewhat unpleasant & bitter pill to for some to have
to swallow, I know, but immutably true nonetheless, whether they
like it or not. :)
