Don't think so Lewin. Your strong arguement against WinModem (playing
into the hands of only one GUI maker) is relevent. RPI modems can be
run in DOS (with supplied s/w) with full facilities. Or even without
EC/DC at a push (+h0 in init please) in DOS with non-RPI compliant
s/w
WinModem can't do either

The informed would choose a modem with _both_ hardware _and_
RPI+ EC/DC. Not only for the flexibility that offers, but with WinModem or
RPI the comport gets less of a hammering

That description is applicable to WinModem (first 100 free, have your credit
card ready :-) but not to an RPI
