Yes, the off the shelf cleaners use an abrasive tape to "scrub" teh heads 
clean and in essence will sand your heads down across time.
        The "better" way to do teh cleaning is with head cleaner and foam / 
chamois swabs - NEVER use cotton swabs !  The little cotton threads can come 
off and gum up stuff.....anyway, if you open up the machine to clean the 
heads, etc. you can look around inthere to make sure everything is OK
