Hi Jim
Please forgive top-post but I suppose it is more efficient in this kind
of response. I bought a box of a dozen USR 56K Couriers from an ISP once
(and still have a couple left somewhere I think) and a few were missing
wall warts, 2 IIRC, and the others had a smatterring of USR originals and
generics. All were 26-27VAC. These aren't dime-a-dozen easy to find but
certainly by no means hen's teeth. They can even still be had from
USR/3Com but they charge way too much IMHO and won't give out hardly any
info at all. I measured each wall wart and then opened up one of the
Couriers to look at the power supply section and at least the one I opened
was well designed with excellent voltage regulation and on the DC side
(obviously) polarity protected at voltage connections to many of the ICs.
This gave me confidence that the 1v differrential was not a problem at all.
I feel fairly confident that an even wider window would work fine, say
25v-28v, and possibly even further due to the quali

ty regulation and of course the use of an AC wall wart as opposed to a DC
external device. Do it at your own risk since you'll get nothing out of
USR but consider that low voltage (within reason) has negligible effect on
most well-designed digital equipment of this nature and the only
consideration with higher than normal AC voltage is heat caused from the
extra current dissipated to "lose" a volt or two. In this case I
would not push that as far as 30VAC unless my curiosity was bigger than my
wallet, keeping it under 28VAC if possible, at least around here where the
electric company's voltage regulation is mediocre and can be as low as
112VAC in the morning and 123VAC an hour later. I guess they assume
everybody uses surge protectors on everything.
Good Luck
Jimmy
