I used to use 1/10th C so it could be used as a charger as well.

Radio Shack used to sell a big open Knife switch I'd use to zap and
leave closed to charge after disconnecting the capacitor.
Used a full wave rectifier as well.

BTW a lightly loaded transformer floats up to a higher
voltage than at rated load.
