Because the smaller things get, the more we deal with the quantum world
and not the classic one. There are major hurdles that need to be
overcome. To effectively use nanotechnology, we must understand and
control individual atoms and even quarks (subatomic). The the laws of
physics are completely different at those distances than the "classical"
ones.
