Hi everyone just thought I would drop a note. I have stumbled across
what so far appears to be a great self help guide to spelling. I had
to use a book (forgot the name) back in highschool which turned out
to be totally worthless. So I've been skeptical of such tools for
some time. I'm going back to school (tech) and decided I'd look in the
reference area of the book store and ran accrose this littel jewel.
The Surefire Way to better Spelling
A Revelutionary New Approach to Turn Poor Spellers int Pros.
Robert C. Dixon
St Martin's Press
Here is what is printed on the Back.
Begin of very long and copyright violation quote :-) :-) :-)
Are you one of the many educated intelligent people who "Can't Spell?
In this innovative and eminently pratical book, Robert C. Dixion
reassures you that there's nothing deficient in your makeup: You've
just been taught incorrectly. Anyone can become a good speller.
Forget memorizing word list. (note: this sold me right then and there)
It's time consuming and doesn't work. Forget trying to depend on sound.
The English language has forty different sounds, but more than two
hundred ways of spelling them. Instead, turn to this book for a method
unlike any other, one that has proved effective in hundreds of thousands
of cases.
Strategy is the key; the strategy of relating a word to its meaning.
With this strategy, you can stop using your computer's spelling checker
as a crutch and convert it into a learning tool. With it, you will
be able to analyze a word, spell it correctly, and "own it" from
then on.
In only a few minutes a day, the program will both improve your
spelling and teach you how to learn how to spell.
Robert C Dixion is currently a research scientist in the field of
disabilities in language arts at the Washington Research Institute of
Seattle and the University of Oregon in Eugene.
(more Bio left out)
End of very long copyright violation..... :-)
I have not got into part 2 of the book yet which is 60 lessons. I
have read part 1 were the author discusess how he came about writing
this book and his stumbling blocks as a spelling tutor who could not
spell himself. He also lays the fondation of what he intends to teach
with the book. For me personally just reading the first part has
help me out eminently in my spelling skills. As for my history I'm
ADHD LD who had teachers who used spelling class as there coffee break
any questions??? :-)
When I've finished up the second part of the book I'll be sure to do a
repost of this and a review of what I think the lessons have done for
me.
Bye for now from one of the worlds worst proof readers and spellers.
