This is one of the points Robert Wright makes in his book,
Nonzero : The Logic of Human Destiny. Essentially, he posits
that it is almost a natural law that social organizations,
over long enough periods of time, tend towards increasing
degrees of (larger and larger) cooperative (complex) groups
(e.g., small groups --> tribes --> city-states--> nations,
etc,) through aquiring greater and greater "non zero
sumness," an outgrowth of game theory. In the rise of such
groups, there is often ongoing competition between
cooperative and competitive phases (e.g., wars and making
treaties, but the overall trend is inexorably toward
cooperation. Today, IMO, the next step would supposedly be
to a (peaceful) global society, and future steps, movement
towards planetary federations and then a pan-galactic
society. Wright, however, does not attempt to project any
further than one world. :) ...tonyC
