I don't think it's worth gating any of that. I saw one moderated ng, but it seemed geared more for already established writers looking for publishers and work contacts. I think the WRITING echo can stand on its own if it can get the attention of some key contributors. There's a writing group in my town for which I set up a modest website and message board in the past. But when the site and message board went "pay only", no one thought it was worth the expense to subscribe. Maybe fido echomail is a good alternative for the group. I'll see what I can stir up to steer some group members to using fidonet.
