Stephane,
SB> I entered the computer scene when MS-DOS was at version 5.0.
SB>I found that it was a decent product, and 'old-timers' seemed to agree
SB>to stop shipping DoubleSpace. As you can probably tell, my perception
SB>of v6.0 and v6.2 is that it basically consists of v5.0 and some utilities.
SB>Hopefully someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
SB>
I don't know (did not bother to Learn) what differences there are between
V5.0 and V6.0. Those differences are in my Dos Programmers Reference Book
which pertains to Interrupt Handlers and related. Of course there are
New Dos Utility Programs added, as well as Enhanced Dos Utility Programs
which you already know.
I started with V3.3 Dos on my old Computer with 8088 CPU, then with the
New (bought in 1995) Computer, got Dos V6.0. Many differences between those
two Versions. Many Features in the New Dos I have not used yet. When there
s a Need, I type "Help" to see what is Available.
SB> On the Windows side, it is generally agreed that Windows 3.0 was
SB>the first version to actually be usable. Previous version just didn't
SB>cut it. And then there came Windows 3.1, which was a phenomenal success.
That's what I am using. My Windows 95 is still in the Box.
SB>other applications to run). If you are a low-end user, starting only
SB>one application at a time and then turning off the computer, then these
SB>two major problems will not harm you. However, if you are a high-end
I usually don't use more than one Application at a time such as Download
Files while I am Writing a Letter (Not yet anyway). Printing a File in
Graphics Mode, such as Microsoft Works uses, on my Old Dot Matrix Printer
is slow, but I like the Print Quality. This is a Good Example for using
Two Applications at the same time when I need to.
Spawning a "Child" Application from a "Parent" Application such as writing
this Reply to you using my Favorite Text Editor ("Child") via OffLine
Mail Reader ("Parent") is usually the way I do things that involve two or
more Applications.
SB>user, starting many applications during the course of a day, using more
SB>than one application at a time (this is what multitasking is for!), or
SB>if you use OLE links (sharing data between applications), then you'll
The File Access Mode, IF set for "Sharing" by the Application, is for
that purpose. Some Applications, when "Opening" a File don't use "Sharing"
Access. The same thing works in Dos (as used in Networks).
SB>that works. If the product does not work as advertized or as the
SB>documentation says it is supposed to work, then they will continue to
SB>release free fixes (fixpacks). Again, this may not be accurate, but
SB>corresponds to my perception.
SB>
If that is what IBM does, it Certainly is a Good Policy.
SB>
SB> Excel is a spreadsheet program. As with most of their software,
Thanks for that Information. I don't use a Spreadsheet, but my Wife
uses Lotus 123 at her Work.
  Again Thanks for your Response.
