I suspect that this is a design feature imposed by the mfr to inhibit
excessive gassing and possible rupture of the case. High applied volts is ok
IF you have enough resistance in series, to hold the current well below the 5
hr rate. Once the battery IS charged, ALL the energy that goes in from the
charger, causes heat and injury.
A gel battery should probably only be charged from the installation it was
designed for [burglar alarm, motor scooter, standby lighting etc] and once
it malfunctions........ toss it out! Cheers...........ALEC
