No need to pull out tyhe rules... Railfans are railfans, if that includes 
modeling so be it!! 
When your out takin photo's and your waitin for that next frieght to roll

ya start to shoot the breeze... are ya gonna scorn us for talking bout models 
in real life????? huh?????, maybe call the cops??? "arrest that man!, he 
was talking about model railroading while photographing that train!!"
Who cares?
