John-
Apparently, we have a misunderstanding. The Save Our Everglades Campaign is
not an environmental or "Green" organization. It is a citizens group working
to get a referendum on the ballot in November to require the sugar cane
industry be taxed 1 cent per pound to pay for the cleanup of the Everglades.
In case you're not aware, the runoff of pesticides and ferilizer,
irresponsibly allowed to enter the ecosystem has and is causing serious
damage to life in that system. To put it in another perspective, I would
suggest you not eat any fish caught in Lake Okeechobee because of seriously
high levels of mercury in their body tissues.
Again, this is a political movement to force the offending party to correct
the serious problem they caused, so that we taxpayers won't have to. This is
not a "what can we do about this" issue, this is positive action and all
Floridians that see themselves as caring about the ecosystems of the world
have a duty, in my opinion to support this. The "donations" are to increase
the resources of the campaign. You needn't give money, but at least sign
petition to get the amendment proposal on the ballot. If you want more info,
write for a copy of the petition, but don't dismiss this just because it's
not a "green" whatever. This is the real thing! This is not talk (or
magnetic ink), this is action!! For Florida and the planet, please go for
it. -Andy
