subject: [OS2HW] Buying MBs

A couple considerations:

The BIOSs are starting to drop the second FDD. I can't imagine what
they are saving. If you don't care, then no problem. A salesman at
Fry's said there were no more MBs with two FDDs. He was wrong. I
easily found two on his shelf. The system builders are dropping one
or both FDDs. But don't expect the BIOS vendors to add USB.

MB\CPU compatibility. There was a time when if it fit, it worked.
Not necessarily so now. Get the processor and board as a set,
preferably already plugged in and tested.

And, MBs like PSs and every other component tend to have many sources
and a very short shelf life. You will never be able to determine what
is best because you will never find everything that is available.

I think there are two aways to buy: shop a big box store with good
service, or search for deals on-line and self insure. That is, except
that sometimes a thing won't work; like my MB that won't recognize KB
or mouse under OS/2.

I have done rather well at http://www.tigerdirect.com
