subject: defragmentation program

On 06-29-97, GILLES HEMBERG said to CHARLES SCAGLIONE:
GH> NO!!! Never do that with WinNT... Defrag will nuke the WinNT
GH> long-filenames and you will not be able to boot WinNT anymore.
CS> Win95's defrag works just fine on NT FAT partitions. Long file names
CS> are preserved same as they would be in Win95. Have you ever used Win95
CS> defrag on an NT FAT partition and suffered the loss of your LFNs?
GH>Yes, I have... And it did kill my LFN's. Same with ScanDisk which keeps on
GH>reporting errors on the NT LFN's.
Then you're 1) using an older (DOS 6.x) version of Scandisk or 2) have a
problem that's corrupting your file system. The Win95 and NT 3.51/4.0 LFN
structure is the same and can use the same tools to check and repair the file
system...
