The old RPI was a bit "iffey". But RPI+ is much better, works under DOS
with supplied software, and Windows or Win'95 with current drivers

 JH> Rockwell modems.

Rockwell don't make modems. Just supply the basic chipset, then config
support to modem makers who configure them to their own liking. The more
serious the "Rockwell-oid" such as Supra or Zoom, generally the more
work that's gone into construction, firmware, power supply, presentation,
warranty, and technical support. There are RPI+ and combi RPI+/hardware
only error correction and data compression flavours up to V34 speeds

RPI+ and WinModem are not the only two around. UMC, Lucent's "Banzai",
are others

Not heard that before. Like the WinModem (which doesn't work under DOS)
your comport gets less of a hammering with a controller-less modem than
with its hardware equivalent. The Sportster Si is a good example of RPI+
at V32bis (max 14k4)

JH> you'll need special drivers in Windows, which aren't compatible with
 JH> many programs.

Not true. The latest RPI+ drivers (good for the Si in either Win'95
or Win3.1, 3.11, WfWG3.11 too) do not affect Win programs run. This is
because the current non-Win'95 version includes VBRUN300.DLL. Comms
applications which interface via DAPI need to no longer
