JK> I am a deputy principal in a small (200 students,
JK> 18 teaching staff) high school in Queensland. My
JK> teachers are involved in many management committees
JK> that plan and monitor the operations of the school.
JK> They are also heavily involved in co-curricular
JK> activities and their all important tasks of
JK> preparation and teaching.
JK> How can all these activities be best organised?
JK> I am seeking ideas, hints, research, successful
JK> structures that relate to management /
JK> organisational structures in small high schools.
Run, not walk, to your nearest library or bookstore and get yourself a copy
of "The New Economics for Industry, Government, Education" by W. Edwards
Deming.
Although aimed at the U.S., the book is adaptable to any western country.
Who is Deming? He is the man that U.S. industry ignored-so he took his
management style to Japan after WWII. The rest is history, but some
industries here and a great number in Japan manage using his style of
management.
See if you can find some companies that are managed using the "Deming
Method". Maybe you can get someone to come in and train your staff. Don't be
misled by the so-called Total Quality Method (TQM) or any management style
that does not let the school work together for the common good of the whole
organization. End competetion and further cooperation among the groups you
have already started.
Let me know if you can find the book or not, I have it checked out for two
more weeks and it is on loan from another library in this state.
Actually, I think you have begun a journey towards transformation of your
school. Keep up the work!
