The ONE situation where a fanless PSU MIGHT make sense is a case where the PSU is mounted NOT at the TOP of the case, as the case normally sits, but at the bottom. Mounted at the TOP of a case, a fan is essential to exhaust heat. With a PSU with vented top mounted at the bottom of the case, warm/hot air rises out of the PSU to be vented with CPU cooler hot air and HDD heat thru fans located near the top edge of the case. In my situation, I have a cube. One half is CPU/Motherboard, the other is HDD/PSU with PSU mounted at the bottom of the case, UNDER the HDD array. There are 2 80mm fans mounted on the rear of the case, exhausting air around the HDDs and above the PSU. Yes this PSU has fans mounted at the case exit and on top of the PSU, but they ONLY exhaust the PSU!! The CPU side has a 92mm fan that pulls air into the case. CPU is water cooled using an aquarium pump in a 1 qt freezer container. Radiator is a pickup truck heater core mounted on the rear of the case so that the fans from the HDD array exhaust thru the radiator. There are 10 HDDs in this case, all of them mounted thru rubber grommets. Their rotation noise DOMINATES the noise generated by this PC. Sitting to the side is a Dell 2GHZ laptop. Fan noise is a different pitch than HDD noise, yet the laptop rivals the cube for overall noise level. -- http://www.boinc.dk/index.php?page=user_statistics&project=sah&userid=190817> Yahoo!
