Because they're on the ground, and they ARE the troops being supported. A
man in an aircraft is more likely to misidentify you as the enemy than you
are to misidentify yourself.

One thing we did in battle simulations was to form task forces built around
the Crusader. Tanks and Infantry would escort the Crusaders into the
Security Zone (forward of the FEBA) and position them to react rapidly. We
would put COLTs (Combat Observer Laser Teams) well forward on avenues of a
approach.
When the enemy was identified as coming down a particular Avenue of
Approach, we would move to pre-planned firing positons and fire a battalion
MRSI mission -- but with each round independently targeted on the
centerline of the road, spaced 100 meters apart.
The ammunition used was SADARM (Searcn And Destroy Armor), which dispenses
two sub-munition that search for targets in a spiral pattern as they
descend, and fire Self-Forging Fragment warheads through the top of tanks.
This gave us 288 SADARMs, evenly spaced over some 14 kilometers of road --
or enough to kill a regiment in one volley.
Can you imagine an enemy division commander losing a third of his strength
in less than a second, while they're still in march column?

Quite easily -- particularly because of our superior intelligence and
target-acquisition systems.

Absolutely!
This thing is a revolutionary development.
