That's entirely reasonable for 8.5" x 11" paper (portrait mode) with
1" margins, leaving 0.5" between the columns, with each column being
3" wide.
Making the adjustment from 4.2 column units to 5.* and above inches
is worth the effort.  Once you're used to it, you can position text
and graphics on a page by using a ruler on the sheet of paper (and
some trial and error).
