Another option may also be a USB modem, so you don't use up you valuable 
Serial COM1: port.

Ray Gwinn's SIO product does allow for the creation of virtual modem 
ports, which may or may not help your situation.

However, the way I read the text at:

It sounds to me that the COM5: only problem is ONLY on Windows 95 & 98 - 
it states at the end that the modem can be installed on other COM ports 
in other operating systems.
