| subject: | F1: Button tops first day of Jerez test |
By Nikki Reynolds, F1 Editor - Motorsport.com
Testing resumed this week with a dozen drivers on track at Jerez in Spain,
where BAR's Jenson Button finished top of the time sheet. Button set a best
of 1:17.708 in the new 006 six chassis, just a tenth and a half ahead of
Renault's Jarno Trulli. BAR also had Takuma Sato on duty, also driving an
006, and the Japanese was third fastest, a good start to the week for the
team.

Trulli was behind the wheel of the new R24 and team test driver Franck
Montagny was seventh quickest in the interim chassis. Trulli focused on
suspension, Montagny on differential development and tyres.
Luca Badoer was the sole Ferrari at Jerez, fourth fastest, and worked on
tyres and new components in the F2003-GA. The Ferrari came to a halt on
track at one point with an unspecified problem. At Fiorano, Michael
Schumacher took to the track in the F2004, also working on new components,
and set a best of 57.113 over 34 laps.
Tester Alex Wurz was the best of the pair of McLarens on track in fifth,
closely followed by David Coulthard. Both drivers used an MP4-19 chassis and
appeared a little more on the pace than last week's rather lacklustre
efforts, although Coulthard spent much of the day in the garage.
Christian Klien was eighth for Jaguar in the R5 and Sauber had both race
drivers present, Giancarlo Fisichella ninth and Felipe Massa tenth
respectively. Massa rolled out the third new C23, working on set up, front
wing and cooling configurations while Fisichella focused on tyres in the
C23-02.
The final team on track was Jordan, Nick Heidfeld sharing an EJ14 with
Italian try-out Giorgio Pantano. Heidfeld only had 20 laps, hampered by
technical problems, while F3000 driver Pantano -- the latest to be linked
with the remaining Jordan race seat -- familiarized himself with the car.
Heidfeld was 11th and Pantano 12th.
