DG>Yes I'm only supposed to scratch the soil 1/4 to 1/2 inch. But its the
DG>watering that is the problem. Part of the problem area is graded, and
DG>tends to wash away with too much water. Then if I forget to water and let
DG>it dry out, well thats a no no. I can't get _one_ sprinkler to cover the
DG>bad areas without washing out one area. So its a lot of work trying to
DG>water each area by hand, and once I plant seeds I _have_ to keep at it or
DG>I've wasted my time. The bad areas are all river sand and dries up pretty
DG>quick. I now understand why I was supposed to cover it with straw!
DG>I'm gonna try this again.
I didn't have any straw, so I used some old window screens that
dissapated the heaver water droplets into a fine mist. The screens
were supported by thin pipes that didn't mat down too much grass
and easely filled in when removed. The screens supported a hose
sprinker nicely that was feed by water pumped from rain barrels by
my celler sump pump (retrieved from its summer holiday 8-).
I don't know how deep your sandy areas are but I remember an much
earlier home sight that sat on several feet of old river sand; so
we would dig down about a foot and the put in about six inches of
clay to support the remaining loam fill and retain sufficient water
to support a fair lawn.
Happy grass cutting 8-)
