subject: A find

I've got to find a way to readily work on the Gateway
computer I found in the trash walking the dog. it's
looking more and more like a server class machine!

I may swap the Gateway out for the H.P. 433 Celeron which oddly enough
runs Knoppix Linux twice as fast as the Gateway Pentium III 450.

The Gateway has FIVE free PCI slots and an AGP plus the sixth PCI
occupied
by the network card, Voodoo Banshee AGP video card.

It's got an older BIOS and had an Promise Ultra-66 I/O card added
just like the card someone sold me that caused so much trouble
That Promise card freezes the mouse in Knoppix just as it did in the
H.P.
with it's non-standard IRQ.

Haven't pulled the memory modules yet but think they're the same as
The H.P. takes PCI-100.

I think it's slower than the H.P. due to the lack of L2 cache memory
but it's got a 100 MHz FSB as opposed to the H.P.'s 66 FSB.

All in all shaping up a fine Linux machine though I've a great deal
more to find out about it.

Why would anyone thow this sort of machine out?
