You _know_ I tend to check on unsubstantiable claims.

That is all that was available to them. What was being panned off as K56Flex 
was actually Rockwell's K56Plus. The Lucent chipset is the first _actual_ 
implementation of K56Flex.

As was noted a while ago, some folks got caught with their knickers locked 
firmly around their respective ankles with the introduction of X2, and 
responded by rushing whatever they could to market. What they put into the 
market was _not_ what it claimed to be either.
