Yeah the whole paid volunteer thing, while bringing back some memories of
that 'working' contradiction in the army, didn't make a whole lot of sense
really. ;)

That's the best sort, IMO. I mean going into different places that need
volunteers to be able to help people out is great, too, but helping
unexpectedly is a feeling that doesn't exactly match it, IMO.

For sure. It's pretty terrible, as we both alluded to below.

It certainly is telling about some different values in this society, if
nothing else. Such a shame that we spend enough on war to feed and house the
entire planet. We've got the wrong people in charge (or more likely, too many
beheaded chickens thinking that they're all in charge).
