Hi guys,
I'm 67 and scheduled to race in the State Senior Olympic finals next
month (1-mile, 5km and 10km). I know about what I need in speed to
win but I need a strategy. Do I go all out at first or at the end? If
I go all out at the end, when do I start stomping and how fast?
To aid in determining a strategy, I put together the following equation
that lets me look at any point in the race and knowing what my average
speed is at that point, determine how fast I need to go to meet an end
of race objective average speed:
s2 = (60/((D/S*60)-(60*m/s1)))*(D-m)
where:
s2 = MPH I must ride for the remainder of the race
D = Race distance in miles (miles = Km*.621)
S = Objective MPH average for the total race (set this to win)
m = Miles ridden so far in the race (from bike computer)
s1 = Average MPH so far in the race (from bike computer)
Suppose that for a 10k race (6.21 miles), I want to finish with a 19 mph
average. By using the formula I can see that I can ride at 18.2 mph for
the first 5 miles but must then push 23.2 mph for the last mile. An
alternative is to cruise along at 18.6 mph for 3 miles then step it
up to 19.39 mpg for the last 3 miles. All I got to do now is apply the
numbers to my bike training to see which is the most comfortable.
Of course, with the one-mile race, Its stomping gears all the way!
