Hello
Sorry to bring up this old post but I was away when it hit the forum and
I'm just getting around to it. I want to disagree with this philosophy and
weigh in for high power supplies. Supplies are like engines, they only
"use more gas" when you put yer foot in 'em and they run cool
when they are basically idling ie dealing with a trifling load as opposed
to being forced to work at any high percentage of possible output. IOW a
450 watt supply will often run cooler and even more efficiently supplying
200watts on average than the same load to a 250watt supply. Well-built
supplies will last many years and I personally own many now useless 200-300
watt supplies not to mention old AT supplies only useful for driving fans
and hard drives in modified cases. To steal a quote from "True
Romance" regarding guns and applying it to power supplys, "I'd
rather have one and not need it than need one and not have it". It is
not IMHO foolish to buy solid, high-powered PS's even though I agree that
450watts is more than Don will presently use. Much better to have a PS
cruising easy than approaching redline.
