It would seem to me possible that they've been around all along, but were not
recognized as separate disorders. Additionally, I would guess that children
with these disorders are more vulnerable to becoming very ill from the
regular diseases of childhood which used to kill many children - diptheria,
measles, etc.
So they would have died of something else before the disease manifested
itself.
