I was not quite sure what you were talking about, but it looked like
adaptive answering stuff, and how the Supra detects incoming callers as
fax or data.
It behaves in two distinct ways when +FAA=1
Method 1. S192=2 (default)
1. Pick up the phone
2. Listen for a few seconds--if hear CNG tone, report "FAX"
3. If not CNG tone heard, then attempt to connect as data call
4. If data connection fails, report "NO CARRIER"
Method 2. S192=0 (perfered way)
1. Pick up the phone
2. Listen for a few seconds--if hear CNG tone, report "FAX"
3. If CNG tone heard, then attempt to connect as data call
4. If data connection fails, report "FAX"
Notice the only difference in the two methods is step #4.
Since I rely heavily on faxes, I always keep S192=0 on my Supra. That way,
even fax machines that don't send out CNG tones right away will be able to
send me faxes.
Now, some people prefer the default. Why? Well, setting S192=0, while
much better for fax reliability, can also cause "FAX" to be spit out my
the modem even if a fax machine is not calling. (i.e., call your BBS from
your voice line, keeping the MUTE button pressed down, and you'll see
"FAX" pop up on the screen after about 10 seconds.)
These "false" FAX connects drive some people insane. ALL DATA CALLS WILL
CONTINUE TO FUNCTION NORMALLY.
Myself, I could care less about "false" fax calls. All I know is that I
want to receive all my real fax calls no matter what, so I use S192=0
